A Priceless Room with a View – Glencolmcille, Donegal

Donegal has many wonderful secrets to uncover – this is one of them.

P1790669-001I wake up to this priceless view from my room and shake my head at its beauty. What sort of establishment would you expect such a view?  Hotel – B&B – Private home? It is actually a hostel and this view can be seen from each dorm and the common room – Dooey Hostel!

This unique establishment was built out of the rock it sits on with a flat grass roof to blend into the surrounds of Beefan Mountain – such foresight for the time to our modern day ‘eco’ buildings.

It attracts people from around the globe who come back year after year – first timers extend their stay. Why?

The view is one of the reasons – the eclectic, unique décor makes you feel ‘at home’. The owners Mary has one of the funniest, warm personalities you could meet – at 77 years of age you will be in for a treat with the conversations. Also Leo, who has that great Irish penchant for chatting and is so obliging, nothing is too much trouble.

It is more like walking into a relation’s home rather than a hostel. Choose a dorm, small private room or pitch your tent and take the views.

The wall in the car park is a gathering place and draws you to contemplate life as you look out at the mountains and beach.

Above all, this is a special place to experience Rural Ireland!
